Will using a 801.11g wireless adapter in my notebook improve my noise immunity to 2.4 GHz wireless phones?

I have a Thinkpad with built in 801.11b that works great at home where I have no 2.4 GHz phones but when I go to a condo the performance is terrible even when the signal strength is strong enough to support 11Mb speed. It is especially bad when using Modzilla Thunderbird to download Yahoo e-mail.
I also wonder if there is substantial differences in improved throughput in noisy environments with the various pcmcia 801.11g cards as the price varies significantly.
I have no control of the environment when I go to a condo (the existance of 2.4 GHz wireless phones or the wireless router). Other users of the condo tell me they get great wireless performance.

The 802.11 b and 802.11 g standard use the 2.4 GHz (nominal) frequency. Many cordless phones use the 2.4 GHz (nominal) frequency. If you are in an environment where there are many cordless phones on the same nominal frequency, you may have problems.

Note that I state 2.4 GHz nominal frequency. Actually there are a series of frequencies around 2.4 GHz; perhaps you can change to a different channel (e.g. you were at 2.409 GHz in one band which is identical to the wireless phone an dif you change to a different channel that is 2.392 GHz you are OK — these are not exact frequencies just examples). You need to match what the wireless access point offers.

If none of this works, try the 802.11 a whic is at 5 GHz which is far from the cordless phones. However, with the higher frequency comes shorter wavelength (frequency x wavelengh = c the velocity of light). Shorter wavelengths do not diffract around corners and you may find the range limited more.

Alternatively, get people to use wired phones. This takes either diplomacy or dictatorship to enact – and if you are limited with these skills you may be just simply out of luck.
